The dawn of a Junior Seminary in the then Enugu Diocese comprising of the present Nsukka, Awguand Enugu Dioceses beganin 1962 with the creation of Enugu Diocese from the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Onitsha in November, 1962. The creation of the new diocese gave rise to the establishment of a Junior Seminary by His Lordship Most. Rev. Dr. JohnCross Anyogu. The seminary was sited temporarily at Awhum, at the former Preparatory Teachers’ College (PTC) Awhum with Rev. Fr. Donald Farelayas the First Rector. The pioneers were moved to Awhum with the promise that the new site for the seminary will be ready in no distant time. By 1964, the construction of the permanent site of Enugu Diocesan Junior Seminary began at Nsukkain its present site. Worthy of note is that from 1962 to 1965 when the Junior Seminary was at Awhum, it had no name; it was just known as Enugu Diocesan Junior Seminary..
The number of seminarians admitted into the seminary was between 31 and 36 with its inception in 1962. The seminary took off with two seminarians as staff: Stephen Obiukwu from Awka Etiti who completed his philosophy and Francis Ugwueze who just passed out from All Hallows Seminary, Onitsha. The rector was strict with academics which resulted in the expulsion of many seminarians such that only 9 students were left among the pioneer class after their third year. Some seminarians were equally admitted in 1963. The seminary could not admit seminarians at the Awhum camp in 1964 because of accommodation. Consequently, the 1964 set were rather sent to St. Theresa’s college, Nsukka. This spurred the new diocese to hasten their constructions at the permanent site (St. John Cross Seminary, Nsukka) to arrest the accommodation problem. The seminary at Awhum had to battle with many problems prominent among them were accommodation as earlier stated; problem of snakes as the place was an open field and the problem of invaders who made away with the articles of seminarians when they were hung outside..
